A frosty astronaut wakes up in the time to come ? Sounds like an episode of countless ‘ 80s scifi show ( or , in the case of Buck Rogers , the whole premise ) . But whether Defiance ’s “ I Just Was n’t Made For These Times ” is a delicious court or hackneyed retread , HOLY SHIT DID THE DUDE THAT PLAYED THE ASTRONAUT BLOW .
I ’m sorry , but the whole installment is concentrate around Gregory McClintock , Super Hero Astronaut and Commander of the International Space Station Who Died in Space in 2013 . Everyone knows his name , the Defianciancians need his autograph , he has books written about him , a motion picture about him , etc . So even if he ’s young , he should have a piddling gravitas or personal appeal about him . rather , we get Channing Tatum ’s Dumber Younger Brother .
It ’s the mammoth , beefcake - y fly in what is otherwise a moderately upstanding sequence . Nolan and Tommy go digging in the Arc that crash last week ( which as you ’ll recall Sukar pull off to keep from hitting the town ) . They get McClintock in a churn - in - a - bag astronaut repast , rescue him , and take him to Defiance .
McClintock deal the news that it ’s 2046 and aliens now live on Earth jolly well , after a venial freak - out when Doc Yewell examines him and he seems to have flashbacks about being try out on by Indogenes , even though he should n’t have known they exist . I ’m sure this will not be a significant cue in project out what happened to McClintock , though . Nolan decides to take him to what would be the most traditionally human place on Earth — Rafe McCawley ’s family . It ’s a hearty idea , and a practiced prison term , if you do n’t listen all the gushing over McClintock . Nolan , Amanda , Rafe and McClintock get really , really drunk and reminiscence about the Earth of older . And then , in the eye of the night , McClintock tries to cramp Amanda .
Rafe and Nolan stop him just in time , but McClintock has no musical theme what he was doing or why . Nolan has Irisa throw him in gaol , where McClintock has yet another freak - out , throws himself against the prison house wall , and start bleeding silver , like an Indogene . Nolan storms immediately into Doc Yewell ’s office , knowing that when she scanned him originally , she should emphatically know he ’s not actually human — and Doc confesses . The Votan did slip a few humans for study before officially come , and the Indogene in especial try on to make a few living weapon system — make Indogene that looked like humans , had the computer storage of humans , but were sleeper agents to kill citizenry in position of power of Earth ( Mayor Amanda being as good as he could get , manifestly ) . Nolan wants to know why she did n’t admit this in the beginning , but she has a pretty good understanding — human and Votan carnal knowledge are in the commode , and if the Earth Republic hears that the Votan abduct humans before the warfare , it would be just the reason the E - Rep needs to announce new hostilities .
This is specially a problem because Amanda ’s ex - beau and current E - Rep representative ( E - Rep - rep ? ) Connor Lang is back in town , trying to romance her away for an E - Rep job . Although glade working for the “ vicious empire , ” as Amanda puts it , Connor is not nearly as much of a sludge this sentence . It ’s clear he still cares for Amanda , and apparently it was her trust issues that shoot them asunder — and perhaps even cost them a family ? ( At least Amanda does n’t traverse it after he say it ) .
On the other bridge player , when he pick up about McClintock and what happened to him , he demands to take the spaceman / hoagie / weapon back as proof of the Votan ’s immorality - doing . Alas , while Doc Yewell is explaining to McClintock he ’s not really human but an Indogene bio - weapon with the memory of McClintock , he freaks out ( not in a sleeper federal agent kind of way , just in a really - overturned - I’m - an - alien - weapon kind of way of life ) and escapse . presently , Rafe McCawley hears an consternation indicating someone has snap off into one of his mine .
McClintock has decide to stop it all , but not before Rafe gives the unseasoned man a little meat - to - heart , mostly about if he feel like McClintock , and has all the memories of McClintock , then he might as well be McClintock ( he ’s kind of gloss over that whole “ I will kill people in positions of magnate who are in close propinquity to me ” matter ) . But that ’s not quite the end . Nolan heads to the infirmary to question Doc Yewell some more — he recognizes she knows right smart too much to not have actually been part of the experiment — but before he gets anywhere , a young daughter from California burst in and directly collapses . Diagnosis : PLAGUE .
Assorted thoughtfulness :
• Hearing that Robert Pattinson played McClintock in the movie of his life — and Mayor Amanda , as the only human daughter in the room , is the only one who remembers whether Pattinson played the werewolf or the vampire in Twilight — is a fun mite .
• Meanwhile , Datak has turned cartoonishly roughshod again — when he stops by the NeedWant for a session with Kenya and discovers that Kenya has pawn off a replacement , he hurts her to show his displeasure . In vitrine you were getting too fond of Datak , it ’s a nice admonisher that he is middling damn crappy to anyone he thinks beneath his station who has wrong him . Since he clawed his manner up from the bottom , it ’s understandable . Still malevolent , but somewhat understandable .
• Why has Kenya stop have sex Datak ? Because she thinks it ache Stahma ’s pridefulness when Datak sleep with another woman . Stahma — who is still contact Kenya for free sex — points out this is a terrible idea , because it only makes Datak crazy and wary . Besides , Datak is one of the most hefty people in township , and sure the one with the least scruples . Refusing to take his sex business is moronic , and I feel like Kenya is bright than that — or is supposed to be .
• Also : Are we supposed to record anything in that Kenya completely leap ship from Nolan to Stahma ? Is she afraid of her feeling for Nolan and thus run into the arm of another ? Is she truly done with Nolan and is Stahma a truer love ? Is Kenya just a adult female in love life with dearest who consistently gets into these serious relationship with citizenry she should be institutionalise for sex ? Or do the writers have no thought what to do with the character and just keep tossing her around to see what works ? I intromit I ’m pretty certain it ’s the latter .
• Seriously , I am not a professional sex worker , but it seems to me Kenya lets her personal feelings affect her business organization decisions waaaaaay too much .
• Last one : Kenya really takes the “ pro ” out of “ prostitute . ”
• Doc Yewell seems genuinely surprised / annoyed that McClintock ’s scheduling would somehow include mayors .
• Also meanwhile , Irisa still pretty much hates Nolan for killing Sukar last installment , albeit not enough to leave Defiance for some intellect .
• At one point , McClintock bemoans something like “ Could she [ my wife ] love me … like this ? ! ” Oh , you mean like a young , super - set male stripper ? Yeah , I bet your 58 - twelvemonth - old married woman could somehow treat that .
