We all jazz that True Detective time of year two was going to be totally different than season one : new cast , new case , unexampled setting . But it seemed hopeful that the fresh sequence would keep the eldritch magic — that thing distinguishing True Detective from a zillion other cop register — awake . So far , not so much .
That ’s not to say I ’m turning my back on the show ; hell , with only two episodes remain , there ’s no way I ’m going to pretermit tuning in to find out who really belt down Ben Caspare , and what nasty and probably to the full justified rationality he / she / they had to remove his eyeballs .
And I ’d sure like to find out what crosstie Ani Bezzerides ’s father ( a New Age craze leader who ’s old pals with certain corrupt bigwigs , including dirty dirtbag Mayor Chessani ) and Ray Velcoro ’s father ( an X - cop who did something during the Los Angeles riots that ’s still haunting him … mayhap involve blue diamond and mask murders ? ) to the big , stinking mess that is Vinci , California .

Three things . That ’s all I ’m in reality dying to discover out at this head , in a show that ’s overstuff with subplots that run to roadblock the good stuff and impart the narrative to a screeching halt . In fact , that ’s the first point in my rant of ways True Detective should have worked this time of year , but did n’t : too many excess plot train of thought . For example , the “ Paul Woodrugh is secretly gay but is stubbornly deny it and marrying the girlfriend he was only capable to bang up by choke down Viagra ” and the “ Paul did some thieving underground hooey in Afghanistan ” train of thought better be leading somewhere , otherwise that ’s a tidy sum of time wasted in the name of character - building that adds nothing to the story . At least the drawn - out drama involving Ray ’s Logos , which was really take up to wear thinly , was answer in episode six .
Some of the plot thread , however , are far from otiose , and actually link up in interesting way of life . ( As the show ’s affection for ethereal shot of the jumbled arteria of the SoCal motorway system remind us , crime and depravity ’ tis a tangled macrocosm indeed . ) The relationship between Frank and Ray is a believable one , two human beings who live by similar codification of honor despite ( unremarkably ) occupying diametrical side of the law . Sure , their paths will sweep over the geezerhood ; Vinci is a small township , and it makes sense that , given their interest , they ’d both be involved in the Caspare investigation . This season has also spend a mint of sentence craft parallel themes that echo among its characters : addiction , seek to overcome a troubled past ( or at least not reserve say preceding to totally fuck up the present and futurity ) , abstracted or cruel begetter , and the struggles of being a parent in general . Mostly , that ’s been an effective tactic .
But True Detective has also gotten some well - deserved criticism for include too many coincidence this season . Just an instance : in episode one , Ani is serve a foreclosure card to a woman who pleads with her to help find her missing sister . Who come about to have been last look in Guerneville , near where Ani ’s family is from . And who happens to be nearly passing out on herself at the sex party Ani infiltrates in episode six . What luck ! What commodious , convenient , screenwritten circumstances .

While it ’s impossible to say how True Detective season two would have been received without the ghost of time of year one looming over it , some of its elements seem to have been include by creator and writer Nik Pizzolatto as a verbatim rebutter to the criticism he weather last class . A swelled ill was season one ’s lack diversity among its main characters . cleaning woman on the show were either murder victim , working girl , or married to / secretly sleeping with Woody Harrelson . time of year two still has distaff slaying victims and even more lady of pleasure , but Frank Semyon ’s wife , Jordan , has an active office in the plot ( even if she does n’t have much controller over Frank ’s progressively questionable decision - devising ) .
And , of trend , we got a distaff cop this clock time : the sturdy , damage Ani , whose brittle anger at the mankind is a direct reaction to all the humans in it . So yeah , more women . Interesting , complicated women . This is progress . But while there ’s a range of raceway included among the ensemble ( including , uh , lots of Mexican gangsters ) , all of the lead characters are bloodless , just as they were in season one .
The change in scenery from Louisiana to Los Angeles , and the accompanying tone shift from revulsion to noir , seemed intriguing at the outset . And while there ’s been some yielding to spookiness , as others have direct out ( Caspere ’s wanting eyes ; the accelerator pedal - add up crow ; Rick Springfield ’s kooky doc read Carlos Castaneda ) , as well as just kinky weirdness ( the Black Rose dive stripe as a meeting point , complete with Conway Twitty imitator ) , it ’s in spades not as spectacular here . And it ’s miss . praise for trying a more hard - boiled approach , but half the fun of time of year one was parse all that crazy Carcosa commercial enterprise and depend for Easter nut along the way . ( Sorry , but switch up the song lyrics of the theme song midseason is n’t the same . )

And while Ray fills the “ haunted lawman ” theatrical role reasonably , he ’s nowhere nigh as magnetic as Matthew McConaughey ’s Rust Cohle , a fictional character so compelling multitude are still quoting the “ Time is a flat circle ” speech . I examine a guy wire dress as Rust Cohle for Halloween last year ! Will I see any Ray Velcoros this year ? Ahhhh … probably not .
It ’s worth noting that time of year two also made a major break behind the camera , hand off steer duties to a variety of helmers rather than sticking with one throughout . If Pizzolatto had kept Cary Fukunaga around ( not likely ; they famously bunt head , and Fukunaga purportedly supplied the inspiration for the “ asshole director ” graphic symbol that appears this season ) , perhaps the show would have sustained its tensity better .
But author Pizzolatto is n’t without fault , either . Though McConaughey ’s experiential blather could be ostentatious , at least it was interesting ( and , as antecedently observe , highly repeatable ) . For all of the gratifying turns of phrase this time of year ( my favourite so far has been Ani ’s Father of the Church to Ray : “ Excuse me … you have one of the biggest aura I ’ve ever seen ” ) , there have been doubly as many clunkers . And now we have just episode left to see if this season can still turn out to be , as Frank would say , “ pure amber . ” Cringe .
