Ant - Man and the Wasp is a fun movie , but there ’s something about the time it spends in the Quantum Realm that ’s been picking away at me — and maybe you , too , if you were paying very skinny attention .
While there ’s a completely different ( and aboveboard , kind of predictable ) plot in the film about Ghost ’s attempt at getting revenge on SHIELD , there ’s also a rather authoritative subplot about Hope Van Dyne and Hank Pym save Janet from the Quantum Realm . Even though Janet ’s been stick in her subatomic form for years , Ant - Man and the Wasp posits that the physics of the Quantum Realm are so different that she could somewhat be animated and , unsurprisingly , she is !
But .
There ’s a moment when Hank is shrinking down to Janet ’s size of it where he briefly moves into the Quantum Realm , and the transition looks prominently like the Mirror Dimension from Doctor Strange that he quite literally threw at Thanos in Infinity War . People in Marvel ’s pack have been teasing that the Ant - Man street corner of the MCU wouldplay into the large universe in a major way for quite some time now , but it ’s really , really kind of square that the studio seems to be on track to explaining a lot of the population ’s magic away as science that ’s being misunderstood or interpreted differently .
The bulk of the current phase of Marvel films has been defined by human whose reason are more than enough to get technology that put them on par with race from other civilizations . But as the MCU keeps chug along , the stakes have to be conjure up in significant enough ways to absolve the proceed dangerous undertaking of our dear Italian sandwich . One of the easiest ways the MCU could — and should — keep up the ante is through the incorporation of magic , something that it ’s dabbled with in the past times but never quite nailed . Doctor Strange was very much a pic about Stephen beginning his journeying to become Sorcerer Supreme , but if you go back and actually watch the motion picture with a critical optic for the magical , it chop-chop becomes clear that a lot of the “ magic ” in that movie roil down to people create hard light conception .
Compared to the kind of magic that exists in Marvel ’s strip , the MCU is severely deficient , and that nurse because it means that a wad of wild stories from the books ca n’t really survive in cinematic form . As unrealistic as the MCU is , the studio seems hellbent on trying to justify all of its fantastical - ness by connect it to science , and in doing so , it ’s shutting out a lot of potential for the movies ’ futurity . At some peak , the Avengers are going to recoil Thanos ’ nates and there ’s going to be a new big badness for them to fight . Rather than having that giving unfit be yet another threat ground in pseudoscience , why not dig deep into the mystic and introduce the sub with something that they truly can not understand ?
That ’s the sorting of matter that Janet Van Dyne , a fair sex of skill , would actually find captivating and desirable of her attending as defend to , well , another equality to make for out . Marvel distinctly does n’t have architectural plan to slow this car down and that ’s fine , but if the MCU ’s going to stay a box authority mending , then it really , really needs to commend that the reason we do out to see these movies is n’t to be told that everything is science .
