From the famous mathematical function of cartographerHeinrich Bünting‘sItinerarium Sacra Scripturae(Travels agree to the Holy Scripture ) , come these fascinating mashup of religion , phantasy and function - qualification .
draw by theYale University Map Collectionas a “ cartographic oddity , ” Bunting ’s single-valued function was issue in 1581 , and serves as a symbolic portraying ( Bünting knew the world did n’t really look like this ) of “ Biblical landed estate . ” Also print in the collection were two other single-valued function of “ gross phantasy ” :
In addition to correct maps of the Holy Land , it also contained three map of pure fantasy : the earth in the form of a clover folio , Europe as a robed distaff figure , and Asia as Pegasus the mythical winged horse [ project below ] . The horse is drawn fairly realistically , so that the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe of Asia has to be adjusted ; the Caspian Sea lie horizontally between the wings and the saddle , and modern India is the off hind leg .

In Bunting ’s map of the world as a trefoil leaf , representing the Trinity , each of the three Continent of the Old World forms a subdivision , with Jerusalem in a R-2 in the center . England and Scandinavia appear severally at the northern edge of the mpa [ sic ] , and the new continent of America can be seen in the low left nook . It has been suggested that the cloverleaf design represent not only the Trinity , but the arms of Bunting ’s aboriginal metropolis of Hanover .
