After a short visit to the Moon ’s far side , a Formosan spacecraft loaded with lunar tilt and rubble has started its return stumble to Earth to deliver these precious samples .

China ’s Chang’e 6 missionascent fomite lift off from the Aitken Basin on the lunar south pole on Monday at 7:38 p.m. ET ( 7:38 a.m. Beijing time on Tuesday ) , and is on its way back home , agree to theChina National Space Administration ( CNSA ) .

Chang’e-6launchedfrom the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center on May 3 and arrive on the Moon most one calendar month afterwards . The space vehicle touch down on Aitken Basin , the largest and old impact volcanic crater on the Moon ’s far side . This volcanic crater may have exposed parts of the Moon ’s mantle by smash it to the Earth’s surface . By grabbing sampling from this impact volcanic crater , the commission could help scientist understand early impacts that helped mould Earth and the Moon and why the lunar far side is different than its near side twin .

After hanging out on the Moon for two day , a section of the ballistic capsule separated from the lander and shot into lunar celestial orbit . There , the rise fomite is meant to dock with the missionary station ’s service module in cranial orbit , which will place the samples in a ejection seat headed for Earth .

The finish was for the space vehicle to collect 2,000 grams of lunar fabric using an onboard exercise . The delegacy is schedule to arrive at Earth and drive home the samples on June 25 .

China has riposte material from the Moon before with itsChang’e 5 delegation , which made history by returning lunar sample to Earth for the first time in more than 40 years . This time , however , the area ’s challenging space program is hoping to become the first to return samples from the far side of the Moon .

Unlike the lunar cerebral hemisphere face Earth , the far side is more densely populated with wallop crater while mostly missing the large , dark sea of chill lava that dominate the Moon ’s near side . There is very little known about the far side of the Moon compare to its nigh side , and scientists are hoping the samples can assist answer questions about the origins of Earth ’s instinctive orbiter .
