We had a gleaming of a more interesting , more bastardly John Constantine last week , but this hebdomad , it was his rival Papa Midnite who vex to be the morally complex character . There is something fun about watching these two graphic symbol work together to solve a supernatural problem and diss each other all the path .
Even after last hebdomad ’s episode , it still experience like Constantine is contend to find its voice . I ’m not particularly surprised thatNBC has decided to hit the pause clitoris . It ’s a perfectly watchable show , with the occasional flicker of something better , but it has n’t quite find a style to stand out from the pack .

I certainly get why the writers adjudicate to split up the team a minute more this sequence . John and Zed are not bad together , but with him being so suspicious and her being so cagey , it ’s not the most sustainable storyline until a few revelations start tumbling out . So when Constantine , Zed , and Chas head to New Orleans to enquire a series of scissor - slasher murder being place by a dead model , Zed ends up pair with Detective Jim Corrigan ( who I realize is an genuine DC character , but just makes me thing of Jimmy Corrigan , the Smartest Kid on Earth ) .
It turn out that the dead have been uprise all over New Orleans , and they ’ve been do a serial publication of ritual death . The modelling , whose face was toss by a fellow model and then pour down herself , has been walk the streets with a face mask , a pair of scissors , and a murderous glint in her middle . Constantine transport Chas to make out with slasher dame , and we see the nature of Chas ’ “ survival of the fittest skills ” when his tegument crumple back together after an attack . After Constantine convinces Corrigan of the supernatural nature of the dying , Corrigan and Zed deal with a ghostly hitchhiker who has been reenacting his expiry with living drivers .
Chas make the more interesting wraith ( the ghosts have trouble when someone throws them off - script , but it takes a while for Chas to figure out how to carry through that ) , it ’s understandably the Zed / Corrigan plot of land that we ’re meant to pay attention to . It turns out that Corrigan already know a great mint about Zed , and not because he ’s psychical . He worked missing persons and remembers Zed ’s face . He does n’t reveal to us , the audience , what Zed ’s tangible name is or what she ’s running from , but he ’s sympathetic to her plight whatever it is . But the mystery of Zed seems less important than Zed ’s presentiment of Corrigan ’s crimson decease . I guess this wo n’t be the last we see of him ( assuming the show is n’t delete ) .
But the snap and crackle of this workweek ’s episode come from John ’s storyline . He promptly discovers the generator of the problem , which turns out to be his sometime frenemy Papa Midnite . I was surprised that the writers decided to use him again so presently , but after watching this installment , I kind of get it . Papa Midnite is a lawfully interesting fictional character , someone who is highly mercenary and yet able to care about other the great unwashed . When his illusion goes awry , he ’s not going to just leave the consequences behind . He ’s a responsible priest .
When the brace link up forces to get off back the dead that Papa Midnite accidentally resurrected , we see some of the contrast between the two . Papa Midnite sort of echoes what that one demon told Constantine in the pilot : that he lack the power of article of faith . Papa Midnite follows his cultural magic , draw power from tradition and a willingness to petition the loa rather than rely only on his own strength . Constantine is too independent from that , and Papa Midnite charge him of being both a dilettante and a charming appropriationist . The latter is in reality a rather interesting idea , especially given that Papa Midnite is a bit insulted by the idea that Constantine takes a little turn of this trick and that custom from various civilization . The more Papa Midnite talks , the more I want to spend clip with him . Plus , the dude talks to his dead babe in Hell . Much more badass than Manny the backer .
His family relationship with Constantine also brings out a lot of Papa Midnite ’s own internal contrast . On the one hand , he seems a bit mafioso sit in his automobile with Constantine lock in the motortruck . But then when he realizes that he accidentally raised a adult female ’s husband from the dead — and that her hubby ’s presence is nominate her sick — there ’s literal horror in his oculus . And while he and John bicker like an old body - burning married match , we learn the one advantage that John has over Midnite : flexibility .
Midnite is fabulously powerful , so powerful , in fact , that he can give John the affair that he ’s been looking for — a chat with John ’s mother — without a 2d thought . But John ’s jack - of - all - trades - ness , his magical melting pot , allow him to come up with solution that do n’t fit within Midnite ’s strict guidepost . It ’s an interesting moral force , especially if the pair come in varying flavour of moral grayness . It ’s almost a ignominy I ca n’t see the writer packaging them up together and take on the Constantine - Midnite show on the road .
