The second iteration of Marvel ’s Darth Vader comedian is almost as much about the Star Wars galaxy in the years after Revenge of the Sith as it is about the titular benighted lord himself . This means , as much as it is a tale of the Sith , it ’s also a tale of the Jedi — and what the subsister of the Jedi Order become when the Order no longer exists to guide them .
Darth Vader ’s current arc — write by Charles Soule and boast artistic creation from Giuseppe Camuncoli , Daniele Orlandini , Java Tartaglia , and Guru - eFX — has spent the past few issues with Mon Cala ’s rebellion from purple rule , as deal dialogue turn sullen and the Empire grass a full ravishment on the water planet . But beneath the seas of Mon Cala , an altogether more interesting mystery has been obscure away : a secretive Jedi named Barr , surrounded by chargeman - armed disciples .
This workweek ’s Darth Vader # 16 progress on the late revelation of Barr ’s enclave of followers , mainly by blame them apart as Vader and the Imperial Inquisitorius come knocking , submit them out one by one as the group judge to buy itself ( or rather , mainly Master Barr ) time to run off - mankind . But they ’re all link by a single figure : Barr himself , who is indeed the sole Jedi of the group .
The idea of a Jedi unite these disenfranchised , disparate people into a resist force against the Empire is a noble one , but there ’s also a sinister implication in at least a few of these flashbacks that Barr is n’t just recruiting these people , but using the Force to influence their fealty to his cause . Sure , within their middle they ’re angry at what the Empire has done , just as Barr himself is , but it ’s not exactly a Jedi matter to do to apply the Force to mentally forge discontented people into deeply committed exemption fighter , peter in Barr ’s own individual war against the Empire .
Near the ending of the issue , when Barr ’s forces have dwindled to almost nothing and he ’s palisade by Imperials , another interesting point in the Jedi ’s life is implied by the inquisitor ( who themselves , as Barr notes , are all former fall Jedi)—Barr was never a master while the Order still existed , he was a Padawan . A Jedi who ’d barely begin training by the time the time everything came crumbling down around him .
The head - tricking of dissatisfied and bereaved someone into an anti - Imperial reserves becomes a bit more understandable in that circumstance : a young Padawan aggrieved by the losses of the purge , force back to heroic measure in desperate times . With the Order sound , time have switch , and in Barr ’s mind , so must the remaining Jedi ’s role in the wandflower — alive instigators of opposition against the Empire ’s tyranny , using anything they can to light that spark of rising .
