Rutherfordium

Discovery : There has been some controversy over the discovery of element 104 . It was first reported by a squad of scientist in Dubna , Russia , in 1964 .   They distinguish and isotope,260Rf , with a reported half - life of 0.3 seconds . They subsequently change the theme of their findings to say that260Rf had a half - life of 0.15 seconds . In 1969 , a team of scientists at the University of California , Berkeley , set about to procreate the results of the Dubna squad , though they used different methods . While they produced four isotopes of rutherfordium , account as to whether or not they were capable to produce260Rf vary , and so does the official recognition of which team receive credit for the element ’s discovery .

dimension of element 104

Rutherfordium is a synthetic component and little is love about its properties . It is presume to be a solid alloy . It is the firsttransactinideelement , and is presumed to have chemic properties standardised tohafnium .   [ SeePeriodic Table of the Elements ]

Rutherfordium has 12 recognized isotopes with bang half - lives . The most stable is263Rf , which has a half - live of ten minutes . It decays through spontaneous fission .

Sources of rutherfordium

Rf is produced artificially and only belittled total have been made . The Dubna scientist produced it by bombardingplutoniumwith accelerate 113 to 115 MeV atomic number 10 ions . The Berkeley team bring about four isotopes by bombarding249Cf with12C nucleus of 71 MeV , and13C nuclei of 69 MeV.

Uses of rutherfordium

Only minor amount of element 104 have ever been develop and its isotope have very short half - lives . For this reason , its only use is within scientific research .
