She ’s written acclaimed runs on Wonder Woman , Birds of Prey , Deadpool , and stacks of other superhero comedian . Now , Gail Simone is doing something she ’s never done before , work as Chief Architect for Lion Forge ’s Catalyst Prime universe , home to superheroes from all walks of sprightliness .
Simone ’s appointment as Chief Architect was announce during this year ’s Comic - Con International in San Diego . I got the fortune to peach to her during the conventionalism about her new role , which she ’s seriously enthused about . In the edited and distil conversation that follow , Simone talks about the Plastic Man miniseries she ’s compose for DC Comics , the special calibre of Lion Forge and the Catalyst Prime universe , and give slight hints about what ’s coming next for the future of that superhero line .
io9 : I ’ve been a fan for a while , Secret Six , Birds of Prey , Red Sonja … I love a portion of your work . But this is very different for you . Right ? You ’ve not been the imaginativeness - bearer for an intact parentage of comics .
Gail Simone : No , I have n’t done that . I have done , on a smaller scale , event books and crossovers , particularly with Dynamite . And that ’s where I learned that I really love doing that . I never wanted to be in an editorial place , I cogitate there are masses a plenty more qualified to do that than I am . But to be in a creative situation and to verify all the moving pieces make sentience story - wise , and creatively , and adding a little “ upping the stake ” eccentric of storylines , that excites me . And then to be working with a society whose goal are very similar to what mine have always been , super exciting . This is very huge . I am so excited to dig into this , you’re able to not even believe it .
io9 : express the goals for me , just for the record book .
Simone : Well , their shibboleth “ Comics for Everyone ” is the braggy , overarch end . And it ’s not just something that they say , it ’s something that they carry out and do . And masses have been hail up and talk to me in someone , electronic mail , Twitter , Facebook — citizenry who are excited and telling me why they ’re emotional . And they ’re excited for a mickle of the same reason : they revel the Catalyst Prime line , they savor Lion Forge , because they feel like it ’s inclusive , there ’s lots of dissimilar storytelling . They have books for everyone . They have Word of God for all ages , young readers , teens , things that are beneficial for libraries , and just cover a huge variety . And I love that , because I always feel like comics [ are ] for everyone . And the more people we can get reading strip , the happy it makes me .
io9 : The affair about your vocation and presence as a God Almighty is that you engage with the fans a lot , and you ’ve built up a very large following . People will follow you wherever you go . Do you feel like comics overall needs to change with how creator engage with audiences , and how can that feedback loop back into an organisation like Lion Forge ?
Simone : As far as engaging , that ’s about a personality and what a person ’s well-situated doing with . I ’m naturally a very diffident person , which , a lot of citizenry when they first hear that are kind of aghast . But this is something that I like to talk about and so I lean to be a lot more outgoing on the topic matter . I ’m not saying that when somebody on Twitter says they like a story , they ’d like that miss to have such and such plot or whatever , I ’m not saying we need to be as influence by that . But if people are saying they love comic , but they ’re uncomfortable because there ’s nothing that really is satisfy what they want to learn , then we necessitate to listen . And we need to hear to people so that we can attract in more people and a large consultation . And the remainder , candidly , from 2002 when I first started to now , is so Brobdingnagian , but that does n’t mean we ’re done yet .
io9 : Can you babble to me about the titles in the Catalyst Prime line and how you ’re responding to to study them ? .
Simone : I ’ve been go through reading the books and enjoying each title separately and thinking about them as a whole , and I ’ve been talking to Dave [ Steward ] and Carl [ Reed ] about their visions and goals . Who is read , why they ’re reading , we ’ve been having these conversations properly now . But I was so impressed with the quality of the books and the character reference that have been created . Summit is just a delight to record , and something different we have n’t seen before . And I love that . And Noble , I care the storyline there , and I wish that the characters are different , they have their own room of mentation of thing , and he has a wife who is very highly skilled , too .
Accell , I had that with me at a Mexican - American owned restaurant the other dark and it just struck such a chord with the owner , who knew I wrote strip , but was finally excited about a comic book because the fictional character shared a similar desktop . That ’s what I love to see , bringing in somebody new , or have someone who ’s been read a while to try something new .
Superb , with David Walker … to have a superhero with Down syndrome and a best friend who plow him every bit , we ’re really just excited by that . And also , Astonisher was just this darker , more weird agency of storytelling ; Alex di Campi is the first one I read on that . And I just fell in love with all these different takes . And memorize that my sister , who ’s in an primary schooling library in a small school district with no budget had heard of Lion Forge — that rouse me . Because I know that the reach is pretty big if that ’s happening , especially in libraries . That excited me a lot .
io9 : Have you had a moment where you understand an editorial selection you may have dissent with in the past was made ?
Simone : I ’ve always had empathy for the whole editorial summons of trying to get periodicals out on clock time . And wrangling a whole art team for a playscript … you cognise , that ’s why I ’m not concerned in being an editor . I can imagine , too well , what it ’s like . But to be a creative coordinator is very exciting to me , and to perhaps take this to the next stratum — because it ’s already gravid — is exciting , too . We ’re design this prominent event next summer that I ’m depart to be part of — I’ll be writing the first thing — and we ’re just going to up the stakes and really make some thing happen and drink down with these case that are already really great .
Simone : I know I ’m going to be compose a new character , so that ’s what ’s going to be happening with me at the end of all this , and co - writing with the event that ’s amount up next summer … but I love the author that are on there . I do n’t sense like they need me to be writing there . But like I said , we ’re going to produce a new reference and I ’m very delirious about her .
io9 : Where is your header as far as potentially break new talent ?
Simone : It ’s hard to get a even flow of workplace from the Big Two regardless of your repute or endowment . Just because it ’s a constant turnover . But the affair I cogitate is attractive about Lion Forge is because it is exposed to new ideas and ways of look at thing . And the characters have n’t been around for 60 or 70 years , so they ’re make for the hearing today and to grow with them into the hereafter . And that is exciting , and I call up that ’s exciting for Godhead , too .
io9 : You have a Plastic Man miniseries coming out now from DC . Where did that projection start ?
Simone : Actually , I ’ve been need to do Plastic Man forever . It ’s like , no secret that ’s a character I require to do . So when DC settle they want to do a miniseries for Plastic Man , they make out to me and asked me if I was interested and I said , “ You know I am . ” I always enquire what mental object level are we look at with this book , because that tells me where I ’m going to gear the content to . Dan DiDio said he really just want to push the envelope , and I mean that ’s double-dyed for a character like Plastic Man . He can work for untested readers and everything , but there ’s just too much potential for going over the edge with that fictional character . And so , I had a blast write it . And seeing the art execute — it ’s just uproarious . And dark . It ’s both , you know ?
io9 : I wish your take . So many the great unwashed have the cartoonish variant of the quality in their head but he was a felon , a guy who does n’t give a nookie . There ’s two sides to a character like that .
Simone : Yeah , and I really have a go at it Jack Cole ’s creation of him , so I want to honor that as well and keep it in the smell — a piddling bit grim in the underbelly there — I think that works because it balances out the silliness of his might . Someone with a different personality and background would use that differently , but I opine Plastic Man , you know , it makes sentience to me that it ’s a niggling off - color at times .
io9 : When do you estimate your fingerprint on the Catalyst Primeline are sound to be felt ?
Simone : I intend it ’ll be experience pretty full - blown by next summer , when the vast event happen . I ’ll be co - compose the lead Christian Bible on that . And when we come out of that , we ’re going to see a unlike iteration [ of this universe ] .
