You know the honest-to-god adage , “ It ’s what ’s on the inside that counts . ” That ’s just what GoPro is banking on with its new flagship television camera , the $ 500 Hero6 . Physically , it looks indistinguishable to last year’sHero5 Black , and that ’s not a bad thing . Under the hood , though , there ’s a inferno of a flock more power .

For starters , it ’s the first prison term GoPro has developed and used its own specialized central processing unit , the GP1 , which sound like it compact a clout . In fact , it doubles the frame - rates of the Hero5 Black . It shoots 4 K at 60fps and 1080p at a walloping 240fps . Practically talk , that mean you could bring back your 4 thou footage at 40 - percent upper ( if your last edit is at 24fps ) and it will be gracious and fluid . I ’m more interested in the 10x slow - motion at 1080p , though — you’re able to do some awing stuff with that . It can also shoot 2.7 K at 120fps , which should mean upstanding slo - mo with the power to punch in or habituate extra stabilizing software in your redaction rig .

talk of stabilisation , GoPro says the Hero6 has the most advanced stabilization of any of its cameras yet , but it ’s still electronic image stabilization — not optical look-alike stabilisation . Electronic stabilization typically costs you a little chip of image quality , but the Hero6 can shoot 4 K in a squarer 4:3 proportion ( call up your sometime tube TV ) , so it ’s possible that it could use that oversampling for stabilisation at standard 16:9 video , which would mean it would n’t lose quality . Or as much , anyway . GoPro say it ’s three - bloc stabilization , which would practice info from the accelerometer and gyroscope to objurgate the footage . We ’ll have to see how it looks . presently , the only action cam that use optical image stabilization is the Sony Action Cam X3000R , which does a killer problem stabilizing 4 K TV without any drop in quality . It would be a feat if the Hero6 can cope with it .
GoPro claims the camera has improved active range and blue - light performance . I ’ve really always found the dynamic chain of mountains on GoPros to be amazingly good , so I ’m definitely keen to see if it wield backlighting even better than before . The Hero cameras have never been cognize for their low - luminousness prowess , so this is definitely a place where it can improve . The Hero6 will feature a digital “ Touch Zoom , ” which I suspect will result in some lineament passing , but it may be just what you need for a quick Instagram dig . There ’s also RAW and HDR photo modes .
The new camera also promises faster wireless transference speeds via 5GHz Wi - Fi , which will be a bounteous factor for GoPro ’s Quik app to automatically yield edits for you . GoPro claims its Quik Stories feature will now use “ computing machine vision and political machine learning ” thanks to the GP1 chip , as well as more advanced sensor data point , so it should be smart about selecting the good bit from your cartridge clip . I taste the Quik Stories have when it first came out in late fountain , and I found that it struggled to select the good spot from my clip . If it in reality improves here , it would be a heavy footstep .

Other than that , the Hero6 looks to be much the same as the Hero5 Black — still waterproof down to 33 understructure without a case , still has that brilliant touchscreen on the back , still phonation - governable , still compatible with a gillion climb , and it ’s uncommitted today . The Hero5 has been my go - to military action photographic camera for the last twelvemonth , so I ’m not mad that this seems to be , essentially , the same photographic camera , just with more horsepower .
Fusion and Karma
We get a duo updates on some of GoPro ’s other products , too . For starter motor , the Fusion , GoPro ’s first 360 - degree globular camera , is finally come out and will cost you $ 700 . It ’s useable for preorder today but wo n’t ship until November .
For those not up to accelerate on it , the Fusion is a three-fold lens camera that automatically run up two utmost wide - angle shot together to make a globose image which can be viewed in VR or scrolled through with your mouse or phone like a live - action at law variant of Google StreetView . There are alreadyseveral high - end and small - end playersin the marketplace ( including Garmin ’s very nice Virb 360 ) , but this is the first fledgling from the most recognizable name in action photographic camera . It ’s been teased since the spring .

The Fusion is essentially a tall , flat foursquare , just about three inches tall , three column inch across-the-board , and one inch thick . It does n’t seem particularly flowing ( or more importantly , hydrodynamic ) , but from the footage I ’ve seen so far it tear eminent - quality clobber . It ’s clean enough to be easily handheld ( and it has firm picture stabilization ) , but it also works with just about every one of GoPro ’s mounts , so it can be worn or mounted on whatever . It has 360 - stage audio frequency , which sounds passably good , and it does a really solid job of stitching footage without big , atrocious seam .
We already bang it would be waterproof , but now we have a telephone number for just how waterproof : 16 foot . That ’s a bit disappointing . I regularly go deeper than that when I ’m devoid - diving event with a masque and snorkel , and I ’m worried about how it will fare during a big wipeout while surfing . Even if it does n’t get pushed deeper than 16 feet , a undulation can impart a lot of additional air pressure . It shoots video up 5.2 cat valium resolution at 30fps and it take 18MP spherical stillness . It has voice control , GPS , Accelerometer , Gyroscope , Compass , Wi - Fi , and Bluetooth . There are also a few new setting . The Shorty ( right ) is a pocket - sized extendable perch and tripod that look sort of precious . The Bite mount is something that ’s made primarily for the breakers crowd . It has a standard mount clip so you could attach it to your board , but then it has a rubber bite crustal plate so you could put it in your back talk for a fast POV dead reckoning — dental insurance not include . There ’s also a new floating hand - handle called the Handler .
nuclear fusion also features a musical mode call OverCapture , which basically lets you inject spherical TV and then pop out a 1080p frame and play managing director afterwards . you may zoom in and out , tilt and pan , and even do disturbed bullet - clock time effects . There ’s the Angel View perspective , which is when a camera is mounted on an extension perch it clip out the perch so it looks like a camera floating in front of you . There ’s also Tiny Planet , which allows you to create a small sphere of the whole 360 perspective .

At GoPro ’s press upshot today , we saw a skater create a video of himself by simply putting the Fusion in the middle of a wry pool , skating all around it , and then he was able to make a fluid picture where the shot followed him flawlessly . You ’ll apparently be able-bodied to do that all from the nomadic app , but that wo n’t be rolling out until an update get early 2018 .
GoPro is selling the Karma drone and the Hero6 together for $ 1,200 .
New Mounts
There are also a few new mounts . The Shorty ( right ) is a pocket - sized extendable pole and tripod . It looks kinda cute . The Bite mount is something that ’s made primarily for the breaker crowd . It has a received mountain time so you may seize it to your plank , but then it has a pencil eraser bite home base so you may put it in your lip for a agile POV shot — dental insurance not included . There ’s also a new floating hand - bag telephone the Handler .
Obviously the Hero6 is the star of the show here , with its new chip and super slo - moment capabilities . I ’m going to spend the eternal sleep of the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. running around San Francisco and crashing into thing with it , so look for our handwriting - on study later today .
Update 2025-04-08 at 9:50pm ET : I got to spend the day with the Hero6 , and I have to say I ’m very impressed at first coup d’oeil .

This is far from a determinate call , because I ’ll have to analyze a ton of footage , but I can narrate you some things mightily off the squash racket . The first is that the boring motion capabilities of this television camera are absolutely nuts . Here ’s a quick cut I did of some of the footage I shot today at 1080p240 . It ’s slowed down 10x , and man the possibility are just interminable .
I also played with the fresh HDR photo mode and it create some hyperreal results — see below . This shot is exactly as it make out out of the camera . The railcar was park in a shadow and the sky behind it was very brilliant , but details are nicely preserved in the darker spots and none of the highlight are blown out . It look really good , if a little belligerent on the dynamic range . Personally , I ’d leave it in RAW photo mode and tweak it manually in Lightroom ( you ca n’t have birthday suit and HDR engage at the same clip ) .

I also noticed that the datum transfer speeds between the Hero6 and my phone ( a first - gen Google Pixel XL ) were very noticably faster . GoPro claims a 3x speed increment , and that seems about right . The GoPro app was capable to pull all of my footage from the Clarence Day ( 45 picture and picture in a variety of framerates and resolutions for about 8.5 GB ) in about ten bit . Not bad at all .
alas , Quik Stories does n’t seem much smarter yet . It mechanically turn off together a three - min video with a lot of pretty slow clips included . It ’s nothing I ’d inflict upon you , though it ’s middling easy to remove clips you do n’t need in there . I was defeated to see that the app does n’t recognize when the tv camera was grow into portrayal orientation for a photo ( which is specially pestering when it ’s shown sideways in a video ) , and unfortunately it wo n’t automatically put footage guess at a gamey frame rate ( i.e. 1080p at 240fps or 2.7 K at 120fps ) into slow motion . Hopefully that ’s poppycock they can fix with an app update .
Anyway , today was just a quick manpower - on with the Hero6 . Like I said , the dense - motion capabilities of this camera are just kooky . Ca n’t wait to spend some more time with it and with the Fusion .
