The set - up for Claude Cloutier ’s animated short Bad Seeds is very simple : two hungrycarnivorous plantswage a turf warover the fliesthat enter their share air space . But the carrying out — asurrealseries of gorgeous drawing that change as the battle heats up — is merely superb ( and often hilarious ) . Check it out !
Hat - tip toShort of the Weekfor partake in Bad Seeds , as well as directing us tothis Sqwigly interviewwith Cloutier in which he explain a number about his mental process : “ The motion picture consists entirely of drawings made with India ink and brushing . These were then digitized and colour by computer , ” the filmmaker told the site . “ As an illustrator , I like exploring different styles and techniques , but I ’m particularly fond of line art … this mode is reminiscent of aqua fortis engraving , or pen - and - ink drawing in books or 19th - century newspapers . Gustave Doré and John Tenniel , the most notable illustrator of Alice ’s Adventures in Wonderland , are major influence on my work . I decided on this type of drawing for Bad Seeds because it evokes the first print editions of fable and classic fairy tales . My challenge with this film was to fetch together the complexity of engraving - expressive style drawing — which , by definition , are static — with the motion liveliness allow . ”
