There ’s Bradley Cooper , Willem Dafoe , Cate Blanchett , Rooney Mara , Toni Collette , Richard Jenkins , Ron Perlman , David Strathairn , and others in what del Toro assures audiences is not a supernatural film , despite the trailer and title powerfully suggesting otherwise . “ This has no supernatural element , ” del Toro recently toldVanity Fair . “ It ’s based completely in a reality existence . There is nothing marvellous . It ’s a very unlike movie from my common , but yes , the championship and my name would make that [ impression ] . ”

The “ human being or beast ” at the center of Nightmare Alley is Cooper ’s character , Stanton Carlisle . He ’s a former carnival doer who utilize the tricks he learned there to con millionaires out of their money by act he ’s a mind reader . This , of course of instruction , does not go over well and gets the shady fibre into lots of trouble .
The picture is establish on a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham , which was famously made into another film before long after , in 1947 . Del Toro ( along with atomic number 27 - author Kim Morgan ) drew from the novel , not the movie , for this adaption and was less enamored with the full , complex story than the unequaled noir world it ’s set in . “ I wanted to do the universe of the novel , which is a minuscule gritty , but also strangely magical . It has a very unusual , mystical allure — and mythical . I was very draw to that possibility , ” he said .
Fox is opening Nightmare Alley in theaters only on December 17 , clearly lay it up for another Guillermo del Toro accolade run . Will this pic noir with a very supernatural feeling , even if it ’s not actually supernatural , do the deception ? We ’d never wager against the man behind Pacific Rim , Hellboy , Pan ’s Labyrinth and The Devil ’s Backbone .
