Christopher Nolan makes some compelling moving picture ( and some I ca n’t stand ) , but regardless of my opinion I do not particularly enjoy watching any of them in the theaters . Why ? Because I ca n’t hear the dialogue . Funnily enough , the mortal who wrote Nolan ’s most famous musical grievance agrees with me .
It ’s a common ill about Nolan ’s directing , in my anecdotal experience : his audio frequency mastering is off , favour the music over the negotiation in a way that can sometimes interpret the latter unintelligible . Notably , Hans Zimmer cogitate so , too . In a late interview withVanity Fair , talk about some ofThe Dark Knight’smost iconic moments , Zimmer recall complaining to Nolan about the same thing .
“ I told Chris the music was too cheap — you could n’t get word the descent , ” Zimmer aver . “ He said , ‘ I wrote them . I can do what I desire . ’ He was correct ; people do remember the lines . He could have done 200 unlike cop - out endings , but he put that ending on . It ’s hard to draw out off a comforting end , if you ’re that ambiguous . One second longer , or one sentence or mention unlike , and it would have been a unlike flick . ”

Well , in my experience , at least , the intellect people remember the lines is because they watchedthe moviemore than once . subtitle are a gold rush , after all . Still , I ’m beguiled to learn that even Zimmer thinks his musical score was maybe a snatch too heavily emphasise in Nolan ’s film .
But , hey , Nolan ’s right . The director can do what he wants , for in effect , and for worse .
