This animal is a fossa cat . At first it nearly resemble a cat . But when you search a small close , close enough to attend at its DNA . . . it ’s still pretty confusing .
The fossa is the top carnivore in Madagascar . It is six foot long from olfactory organ to tail , sixty pounds , and moves with a lean lightness , reinforced by retractable pincer . First formally distinguish by westerly scientist in 1833 , it recoil off almost two hundred years of debate about exactly what it is .
Perhaps that ’s not the correct way to put things . We have it off what it is . It ’s a fossa , pronounce “ foosa , ” and it pads around Madagascar ’s forests wipe out lemurs . Scientists are more interested in debating what it is like . This has been a question posed about most Malagasy animals , since the island was in ecological closing off since it separate off from Africa some prison term before monkeys were fabricate .
When a fossa was first formally described in 1833 its protruding muzzle and rounded , slightly - fine-tune ears caused scientist to throw it in with the family Viverridae . Then DNA occur along and clarified everything . In 1993 , a field of the gene of the fossa put it in with Viverridae and the civet won out . In 1995 , the authors of the same discipline took another look and put it in with Felidae . By the clip the new millennium came around the genus Fossa was back among the mongoose , with Herpestidae . The fossa now has its own kinfolk , Eupleridae , which lumps it in with other Malagasy carnivores , and keeps its freestanding from the animals in mainland Africa and Asia . Perhaps that ’s the best position for this lovely monstrosity of nature .
