You might already know that Game of Thrones filmed a pilot burner that never aired . With dissimilar actors trifle Daenerys and Catelyn , and a few other changes . Not much is known about this early Thrones pilot program , except for a few hints — but a transcript of the script was posted online . Here ’s all the scoop about the Westeros you never saw .
The original Thrones pilotwas film in the fall of 2009 , direct by Thomas McCarthy in Scotland and Morocco alternatively of Northern Ireland , Malta and Croatia like the airy episode . A few conniption from this archetype made it into the aired pilot , but most of it was scrapped and redone . In 2011 , producers David Benioff and D.B. Weisstold usthat they watched this version of the pilot burner with their friend who had n’t read the books — and at the goal of the hour , their friend had no clew Jaime and Cersei were comrade and baby .

Before we dig in , a caution : We ’re not 100 percent sure that this pilot script is genuine , but it seems to be . At the same time , it fit in with everything we ’ve heard about the original pilot and the alternative that it made otherwise .
So how is the original airless fender different from the edition that aired ?
TL;DR : The pilot version is closer to the Holy Scripture , and everything feels a bit stiffer . The nomenclature is generally more formal , and the scenes go on longer and are more draggy . A lot of essential exposition is leave alone out or indecipherable , and the characters ’ relationships are n’t highlight the same room . The Stark kinsperson , in particular , feel way less like a real kinfolk of mass who love each other in the pilot script .
Most of all , take the stuffy pilot light makes you realize just how many clever choices Benioff and Weiss made in the aired version , and in the show generally , to make this huge and straggle world both comprehensible and irresistible .
Here are 12 differences between the pilot playscript and the first actual instalment :
1 ) We get a really close look at the Others . rather of that awing stab of the forest fire fighter walking out of the Wall , the pilot light starts out with Will , the short unsaved ranger , staring at the frozen corpse ( who are n’t decapitated , or virtually as creepy , in the pilot hand . Nor are they coiffe in a eldritch design , as they are on screen . ) Also , Ser Waymar Royce , the loutish commander of the group , has way less duologue than he get in the aired version — he fairly much just doubts Will ’s word about the idle Wildlings , and then goes to investigate and gets killed . They talk to each other in a strange language , “ with voices like cracking frosting . ” The literal program does n’t give us such a good look at the Others until the end of season two .
2 ) The credits succession is very different . or else of the beautiful “ orrery ” composition that the show eventually choose , there ’s a sequence where an old humanity , whose face we do n’t see , writes a message on a sheepskin scroll , which he ties to the ramification of a Corvus corax . The raven fell away from Castle Black and the Wall and across the landscape of Westeros , which becomes a map . The major destinations are labeled , admit Winterfell , the Kingsroad , Moat Cailin , the Riverlands and the Vale of Arryn . And Ned , not Bran , says “ Our way is the older way ” in the buffer , which is less interesting .
4 ) Theon is way more of a loudmouthed saccade . Again , like the book , we do n’t see a dead stag — just a dead direwolf with an antler bond in it . And when they find the dead direwolf , they do n’t realize at first that it has pup . Theon is much more aggressive and scornful about the direwolf whelp , and Ned Stark barely speaks at all in the pilot version of the vista . It ’s Theon , not Ned , who proposes stamp out the pups , going so far as to seize one of them and raise his sword . When Jon finds the small white wolf , Theon jeering , “ An albino . That one will exit even faster than the others . ” But Jon says this one is his . Throughout the hand , there are scene directions like , “ Theon take in with his characteristic wry contempt . ”
5 ) We meet Daenerys way earlier . In the airy installment , it takes 33 minutes of Starks and Lannisters before we get our first expression at the exiled Targaryens . But in the pilot adaptation , we startle straight from the direwolf pups to Pentos , where Daenerys is trying on a new gown . This is even faster than in the Scripture , where we get Ned ’s reaction to Jon Arryn ’s demise before play Daenerys . you’re able to see why they moved Daenerys ’ foundation further back — in the pilot , it feels jarring , because we ’ve only just met the Starks , then we meet the Targaryens , after which we suffer the Lannisters . 6 ) No Cersei / Jaime scene .

- The pilot has a lot less of the Stark family . The scene of Catelyn and Maester Luwin machinate for the arrival of their guests , and Jon , Robb and Theon getting shaved and prettied up for the Queen , are n’t in the pilot book — they were add together later , and it ’s well-situated to see why . They aid to flesh out the characters and add up some build - up to the King ’s arrival . Also , the scenery in the godswood where Catelyn tells Ned that Jon Arryn is dead is a lot stiffer and less realistic in the airplane pilot , and it detours into a big argument over whether Bran should have witnessed the renegade ’s performance . And there ’s none of that business sector of Arya wearing a helmet , in the pilot book . Finally , the pilot handwriting also lacks the scene where Cat brushes Sansa ’s hair and Sansa obsess over whether Joffrey would wish her .
9 ) The crypt scene is a lot longsighted in the pilot . In the aired TV episode , we get a brace abbreviated snippets of Ned Stark and King Robert visiting the Stark family crypt so King Robert can pay his regard to Lyanna , Ned ’s deadened baby . But that successiveness goes on much longer in the buffer , and is one long scene rather than two short ones . It terminate with Robert saying he never loved his brothers , but Ned was “ the brother I chose . We were meant to be family . ” Robert also seems more openly awless of his married woman in the pilot light version .
9 ) Tyrion pets Ghost . Just like in the Good Book , Tyrion admire Jon Snow ’s direwolf , although Tyrion is concerned that he ’s scare the beast . “ He ’s not afraid , ” Jon enunciate . To which Tyrion responds , “ He is ! I am terrify ! ” And then Tyrion actually set about to pet the direwolf , saying “ Niiiiice wolf . ” Also , the scenery between Jon Snow and Benjen Stark goes on much longer in the pilot burner , and hews a lot more tight to the book .
10 ) The Feast scenes play out somewhat differently . In particular , in the original pilot burner both Cersei and Jaime talk to Catelyn , and they only admire Sansa from a distance — there ’s none of the setting where Sansa come up and peach to Cersei about clothes - making and clobber . The pilot film book also lacks the scene where Benjen and Ned Stark talk about the deserter that Ned run , and the theory of White Walkers come back . Meanwhile , the opposition between Ned and Jaime Lannister get on much longer in the pilot burner , with Jaime taunting Ned about his father ’s demise at the Mad King ’s helping hand . Jaime says he gave Ned justice , but Ned should n’t bother to give thanks him — oh , wait , Ned never has . ( I believe some of this conversation was moved to another episode , later in the season , where it transpires in the throne room . ) Later , Jaime bemoan to Tyrion that people process him like some “ back - bowling alley cutthroat , ” just because he killed the worst king in 1,000 age . Tyrion respond that he ’d bet on Jaime in a fight between Jaime and Ned , “ but I would n’t bet much . ” Cersei watches Tyrion bumble outside and tells Jaime that their pal is a “ vile little beast . ” Jaime responds that Tyrion “ bring the mitt he was deal — as do we all . ” Over that last bit , Jaime seem over at the drunken lecherous King Robert .
11 ) Catelyn tells Ned he must go to King ’s Landing . The conversation between Ned and Catelyn is right smart stuffy to the leger in the pilot , with Catelyn narrate Ned he must go to King ’s landing place — rather of the version that bare , with Catelyn saying , “ I wo n’t let him take you . ” ( And the pilot hand observe the affair from the books of Catelyn and her sis Lysa bear their own private childhood language . ) After Catelyn have Lysa ’s message in the pilot hand , she is even more resolute that Ned must go in the south with the King , to which Ned respond , “ I am not your dog to program line , my ma’am . ” In general , the human relationship between Ned and Catelyn is much less loving in the airplane pilot script — they seem like they barely bear each other . Oh also , the pilot has that scene from the books where Bran spars with Prince Tommen while Arya wish she could bring together them .
12 ) Daenerys ’ hymeneals is a bit nicer . Famously , the wedding view in the pilot was a fancy affair , where George R.R. Martin himself toy a Pentoshi noble in a heavy silly hat . Much of it plays out the same as in the aired version , except that Daenerys — who ’s describe earlier as having a “ stable foetor ” by Viserys — bring home the bacon over the Dothraki with her cavalry - riding skills . And like in the book , she recount Drogo he has given her the wind , when he gives her that endearing horse . Like in the airy verison , Drogo hold back saying “ No ” to Daenerys , as if that ’s the only word of the common tongue he knows . But he does n’t have sex with Daenerys until he asks “ No ? ” and she says , “ Yes . ” ( In the aired reading , it ’s just a lot of Drogo saying “ No ” and then they have sexual urge . )
