How did the people of the Soviet Union expect to dwell in the year 2017 ? A filmstrip from 1960 shows that their expectation were pretty similar to the futuristic predictions of Americans . With a touch more Communism , of course .
Matt Baillie from the Facebook groupSoviet Visualssent me a tip about the retro - futuristic filmstrip , which would have been played through a Diafilm in the sixties — a kind of home slideway projector that wasincredibly popularin the Soviet Union .
The illustrations were create by L. Smekhov and written by V. Strukova and V. Shevchenko . And it ’s unbelievable how closely they mirror what was going on in the United States as far as technical dreams were concerned .

I ’ve include prime images from what is likely the original source ( Sergey Pozdnyakov ) below , along with some of the version from theMoscow Times , which our own Russian - verbalize editor program confirm are accurate .
Someone also did avideo versionif you ’d wish to watch it that direction . It has jazzy medicine and adept wipes if that ’s your thing . Otherwise , some of the stills are below .
The first panel reads “ In the Year 2017″ , naturally .

One of the panels shows students of the year 2017 using a “ special cinema gadget ” which allow them to look back at how the Soviet Union was created and evolved . Interestingly , the representative depend like it was almost certainly cheer by the Futurama showing from the 1939 New York World ’s Fair .
visitant to the bazaar could take care at the futurist cities of tomorrow in the Futurama ride , not unlike the Soviet kids above .
Much like the dreams that were sell in the United States at midcentury , everything in the future Soviet Union would be atomic powered ! include the trains !

From theMoscow Times :
The youngster try the voice of the storyteller : “ And here is the decametre across the Bering Strait . Do you see what ’s whizzing over it ? nuclear - power trains . The decameter blocked the cold water currents from the Arctic Ocean and the mood in the Far East ameliorate .
The boring of the future will be progress as well . “ And then , the earth airfoil kind of melt down away , and you could see what was happen in the gut of the earth . In the depth of volcano , underground gravy boat - mole made out of especial heat - tolerant brand were rive mines towards eternal sources of energy . ”

And there ’s awing space change of location , of course .
Then in the film , the Earth itself disappears . In outer space , almost at the stop number of light , photon interstellar rocketships put off for the nearest and faraway planetary organisation , Alpha Centauri .
The pictures of space travel are decidedly Soviet , but Americans will perhaps recognize a hint of Chesley Bonestell from themid-1950s .

We gather a young boy discover Igor in the strip , whose founding father works in atmospheric condition control . conditions control , of course , was something that both the United States and the Soviet Union obsess over during the Cold War as apotential arm .
Above we see Igor stick in an “ instruction note ” into the computerized kitchen , which spend a penny his breakfast . After the machine reads the instructions , “ robotic scoopers assess out what ’s needed , and special knives quickly chop up vegetables . ”
If this all looks similar to the Jetsons , that ’s because it is . And this was produced a full two years before the Jetsons wouldair on American TV .

Did the Jetsons of 1962 rip off this Soviet filmstrip ? Probably not . It ’s yet another reminder that the Jetsons was a parody show , adopt its ideas from 1950s futurism and heightening the silliness . This computerized kitchen was in all probability inspire by the other visualization of futuristic food for thought that would come out in the fifties . Perhaps they were even inspired by the futurist fair put on inMoscow in 1959 — coordinate by the Americans who were much more obsessed with the futurity of food than the Soviets were during this period .
Igor ’s menage has a videophone , as one might have a bun in the oven . you’re able to see it as a standalone appliance on the left as Igor rushes to babble out with his mother . Much like the Jetsons , length is n’t a hindrance to communication for this version of 2017 .

Igor ’s female parent happens to be on a “ float kindergarten ” of the future on the Black Sea .
From the Moscow Times :
“ Are you … in the Black Sea ? ” Igor asks , surprised . “ I ’m here for work , ” she says . “ I ’m inspecting the Black Sea ’s floating kindergartens , and I also drop in on ours . Call Dad and separate him I wo n’t be home until tomorrow . ”

And what happens when you ’re in the harsh winter elements , like the fit you see above ?
You go underground …
… where an incredible utopia of perfect weather awaits .

These underground cities produce good deal , though . This one , known as Uglegrad is showing a visiting chemical group of students how much they produce .
But it ’s not all hard work . “ An eternal springiness rein , ” as the guide boasts of what they have built underground in the futurist yr 2017 .
And much like the impressive drill illustrate in the United States by the likes of Arthur Radebaugh and Walt Disney ( through the direction of Ward Kimball in 1958 ’s “ Magic Highway , USA ” ) the Soviets had their own adaptation .

https://gizmodo.com/magic-highway-u-s-a-publicity-stills-1958-512628467
Igor ’s father works with weather control post like the one we see above .
But there ’s fuss in paradise . The lousy imperialists ( understand : Americans ) are mess with artillery that they should n’t have .

Meanwhile , back at the Central Institute for Weather Control , where Igor ’s Father-God works , there ’s awful news . “ We ’ve just been inform , ” the read/write head meteorologist says , “ that the last rest imperialists , hiding on a distant island , have test a ostracize meson arm . During the trial , there was an blowup of unprecedented lastingness , which destroyed the full island and simultaneously create atmospherical flutter around the planet . ”
What will Igor ’s father do ? The dirty rotten imperialist have cause a storm with their damned weapon tests in the South Pacific .
The conditions station needs to be dispatched to save as many people as possible .

On the television screen in the station , an image of the Black Sea seacoast flashes . A mammoth tornado rips off the roof on homes , tearing aside a century - old village .
The brave human race of the conditions station have saved the sidereal day .
When the weather place return to Moscow , the men are hailed as heroes , having used their weather ascendancy powers to save hundreds of life .

Igor and his father embrace , as everyone in Moscow pass off a great suspiration of ministration and woman confuse efflorescence at the brave Soviet heroes .
And the family is reunited , if only over videophone for the minute . The imperialist arm ’s terrible weather effects have been contained in the glorious year 2017 , but the last vestiges of their capitalistic effort likely have n’t been completely wiped out . We take over that vigilance will remain necessary .
