The Citadel managing director Ciaran Foy was attacked by a clique of 14 - year - old kids and beaten with a hammer . Afterwards Foy found it difficult to go forth his own household . He could n’t even get past his own front door . Years later on , Foy has turned the crime into a pretty kickass horror moving-picture show about gang of craze feral adolescent who vagabond the UK streets looking for more sister to summate to their brood . We spoke with Foy about making movie monster out of his material life sentence repulsion story .
Do these creature from your movie have an prescribed name ? I sleep with they used to be human , but when they switch do they have a different name ? Did you plot out a backstory for them ?
Ciaran Foy : I had a whole backstory write out for them , because I felt it was significant for the writer , at least , to have a go at it where they come from . And how they operate on and all that variety of stuff . But later I than get down a process of peeling back what information I gave . As a film fan I think most horrors give away too much these day . And I wanted to leave some bread crumbs so hoi polloi could make their own hypothesis when they provide the film . I did n’t want to have it all package with a nice bow . Because when that happens to me I straightaway forget about the film .
In the backstory and in the script they were holler “ the hoods ” and that variety of did n’t make any sentience to anyone so they became the feral kids .
What are the rules with these creatures ? I know they ’re blind and they can smell revere , but what other rules must they abide by ?
Not really . In realism they ’re just a materialization of a metaphor of something that happened in my own life . But in the picture show existent life , they hunt in packs to circularise themselves . They kidnap young youngster , the young the salutary . They sort of raised them the way they were raised in cage in the cellar . Originally I had it that there was a strange fungal infection in the tugboat they dwell in . And that they were all addicted to the fungus . Which is what they ’re injecting the kids in the cages with in the panpipe . That was what was mutating them . in the beginning that was explained in the film , but it was more creepy check an edit with one of the ferine kids licking the walls . And you ’re not quite sure why he ’s doing it .
I was attacked by a gang of youth when I was 18 that left me with agoraphobia . But the scariest thing for me was that they did n’t take anything , they did n’t want anything . There was no rhyme or reason as to why it take place . I think when you know why something bump , you’re able to eventually make peace with it . But i imagine when you never know how or any of those thing . To me , that is the fundamental of panic .
How similar was your experience with agoraphobia and what the eccentric went through in this picture ?
Well it ’s kind of in many direction the first half of the film is very personal . After the flak , I was 18 still live at home with my parent , the front door became the bad challenge for me . I approximate it stand for the one doorway I could n’t slide by . I could n’t even bleak to think about walking outside get alone actually doing it . It became ( I know it ’s chintzy ) but it became this Kubrick banding of end . That rectangular Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe became a terror occlusion . The headstone . And in the movie we wanted to keep Tommy ( the main graphic symbol ) framed and somehow always being attacked by rectangles .
So from that standpoint , feeling that sentiency of everlasting helplessness . I ca n’t even enter the front door . I should be capable to face the globe , what is untimely with me . It ’s complete irrational fear . For me it was irrational fright coupled with the tangible fear of what was waiting outside . And the fact that the guy cable who attacked me were still drift the streets . From that stand , it ’s very real .
Citadel will be open up in select theaters beginning November 9th .
