The World’s Worst Prisons: Sabaneta Prison, Maracaibo, Venezuela
Given that Venezuela has the world’ssecond highest homicide charge per unit , it ’s probably no surprisal that Venezuelan prisons are consider to be some of the most violent in the world . Humberto Prado , director of the Venezuelan Prison Observatory , states that 80 percent of Venezuelan prison are actually run by armed inmates .
Of those inmates , more than 3,700 of Venezuela ’s most violent ones are packed like sardines into Sabaneta , a prison house build to house no more than 700 .
As you ’d judge , the prison house is filthy , severe , overcrowded , and neglected . And with aprisoner - to - guard ratioof about 150:1 , maintaining gild is exceedingly hard .

The prisoners , of course , maintain their own kind of lodge , in the form of a unbending , gang - control power structure . wretched , scurvy - status yardbird are forced to pay the more powerful inmates just to fix a stead to sleep , and if they want water , many prisoner must drink directly from corroded bathroom pipe .

As a result of such abhorrent abuse , drunken revelry have broken out time and meter again in the prison ’s bloodstained account . In 1994 , 108 prisoners were kill in a particularly brutal riot that left the prison house scorched black . In 2013 , 16 inmates were kill during a riot .
