Whileat the London premiere, Chamalet spoke to PEOPLE about the challenge of “loosening up” in the role.

“I realized everything I’ve worked on [has had a] grounded seriousness to it, and here I had to loosen up and play, kind of like I did in high school, but I hadn’t done in 10 years or something,” he said to PEOPLE during a conversation with a group of reporters.

“That was the learning curve. But once it was in full swing, then it felt like we were cookin.' "

The actor also shared, at the London event, that he didn’t reach out to predecessorJohnny Depp, who played Wonka in the 2005Tim Burtonremake of the film based onRoald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel, while preparing for the part.

“[Charlie and the Chocolate Factory] came out when I was about 10 or 11 years old. And I just thought it was very bold,” Chalamet toldE! Newson the carpet.

Chalamet added that he loves the 1971 film adaptation, starring the lateGene Wilderas Wonka, which he “saw first” and “grew up on.”
